According to legend, the fir tree first became a holiday symbol in the 7th century when a monk named Saint Boniface traveled to Germany to spread Christianity. During his travels, Saint Boniface is said to have come upon a group worshipping an oak tree. In order to stop them, he chopped the oak tree down and in the spot where it fell, a fir tree grew. Legend holds that he proclaimed the fir tree the 'Tree of Life' and told the people it represented the life of Christ. The fir tree has been a symbol of Christmas and the holiday season ever since.
